Kewpie is an American character that was popular in the early 1900s, both in America and Japan. The name Kewpie was chosen for the product and company in the hope that Kewpie products would be loved by the Japanese public, just as the Kewpie character was at the time.

Although both are emulsified sauces, mayonnaise and dressing are two distinct products. Mayonnaise contains more fat and is typically thicker than dressing. Dressings must contain starch, while mayonnaise does not. Both mayonnaise and salad dressing can be enjoyed as accompaniments to salads and other dishes.
